“Athapaththu Identifies Young Talent for Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup Mission”

Sri Lanka’s skipper, Chamari Athapaththu, has singled out Kavisha Dilhari and Vishmi Gunaratne as potential game-changers for the team in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Bangladesh. Despite her own comparatively modest performances, Sri Lanka secured their place in the main event, with Athapaththu highlighting the contributions of these emerging talents.

Athapaththu particularly praised Dilhari, noting her prowess as a dynamic all-rounder. Dilhari’s standout performance against Scotland, where she claimed a career-best 4/13 and three catches, showcased her potential to make an impact with both bat and ball. With 38 T20I wickets at an average of 23.1, including seven wickets at an average under 10 in the Qualifier, Dilhari has proven herself as a valuable asset to the team.

Gunaratne, who captained Sri Lanka in the 2023 ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, also impressed with her batting performances. She emerged as the team’s leading run-scorer till the semi-final stage, with a career-best 73* from 64 balls against Uganda during the group stages.

The rise of these young stars alongside Athapaththu, who has often been the standout performer for Sri Lanka, presents a promising outlook for the team. Athapaththu expressed her confidence in Sri Lanka’s ability to perform well in the T20 World Cup, with her sights set on reaching the semi-finals for the first time.

While emphasizing the importance of taking each game one at a time, Athapaththu stressed the need for the team to focus on giving their best on the field. With players like Dilhari and Gunaratne stepping up, Sri Lanka aims to make a mark in the tournament and showcase their potential on the global stage.
