“Pakistan Names World Cup-Winning Coach for White-Ball Team; Australian Legend Assumes Red-Ball Leadership”

Pakistan has appointed new head coaches for their men’s white-ball and red-ball teams, ushering in a new era for the cricketing nation. Gary Kirsten, renowned for coaching the Indian team to victory in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2011, will take charge as the white-ball head coach, while former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie has been named the head coach for Tests. Azhar Mahmood, who recently served as the head coach during Pakistan’s T20I series against New Zealand, will continue as an all-format assistant coach. These appointments are set for a two-year period, as confirmed by the PCB.

Gary Kirsten, currently fulfilling coaching duties with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, will join Pakistan after the conclusion of the tournament. His tenure will commence with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, followed by subsequent tournaments such as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, T20 Asia Cup 2025, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Jason Gillespie’s tenure will begin with Pakistan’s home Test against Bangladesh in August, followed by Test series against England at home and South Africa away. Both coaches bring extensive coaching experience to their roles, with Kirsten having led India to World Cup glory in 2011 and Gillespie achieving success with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Adelaide Strikers.

These appointments mark the start of a fresh chapter for Pakistan Cricket under the leadership of Babar Azam, who was reinstated as captain in March. Gary Kirsten expressed his excitement at the opportunity to coach the Pakistan men’s national team in limited-overs cricket, aiming to unite the team and achieve success together. Meanwhile, Jason Gillespie emphasized his love for Test cricket and his determination to win matches, aiming to contribute to Pakistan’s success in the traditional format of the game.

Both coaches expressed their gratitude to the PCB for entrusting them with these roles and conveyed their eagerness to work with the talented players of Pakistan. The focus is now on building a competitive team capable of achieving success across all formats of the game.
