“Lanning Opens Up: Reveals Struggles Behind Early Retirement Decision”

Meg Lanning, the former Australia captain, recently opened up about the challenges she faced during her international cricket career, shedding light on her struggles that ultimately led to her surprising retirement in November last year.

Despite still being at the peak of her performance and considered one of the world’s best batters and captains, Lanning decided to step away from international cricket at the age of 31. In an interview on the Australian podcast The Howie Games, she revealed some of the difficulties she encountered and the coping mechanisms she employed.

Lanning admitted to using exercise as an outlet to deal with her struggles but acknowledged that she wasn’t fueling her body adequately to support the increased physical activity. She disclosed that she was over-exercising, running around 85-90km per week, which eventually took a toll on her mental and physical well-being.

As a result, Lanning experienced significant weight loss, dropping from 64kg to 57kg, and noticed changes in her behavior and mood. She became withdrawn, moody, and disengaged from friends and family, finding solace in running as a form of mental escape.

Despite her efforts to hide her struggles, Lanning believes her teammates could sense that something was amiss. She acknowledged the importance of seeking support and opening up to others, emphasizing the value of communication in overcoming challenges.

Reflecting on her experience, Lanning highlighted the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health issues, regardless of one’s status or achievements. She emphasized the significance of reaching out for help and the positive impact of sharing one’s struggles with others.

Lanning’s candid discussion sheds light on the importance of mental health awareness and the need for support systems within professional sports, encouraging athletes to prioritize their well-being and seek assistance when needed.
