“Papua New Guinea’s Women Make History with Victory over Zimbabwe”

Papua New Guinea’s women’s cricket team secured a historic victory over Full Member opposition in a T20I, defeating Zimbabwe in a thrilling Super Over contest in Harare. All-rounder Sibona Jimmy emerged as the hero of the Super Over, scoring four crucial runs off the final two balls and then successfully defending seven runs against Zimbabwe’s batters Kelis Ndhlovu and Mary-Anne Musonda.

Earlier in the match, the tourists faced a daunting task of scoring 15 runs off the final over in their chase of 120 runs. Despite the challenge, veteran Pauke Siaka’s late surge, which included a flurry of runs, helped Papua New Guinea level the scores. However, a run-out on the last ball kept the scores tied, leading to the dramatic Super Over finish where Siaka and Jimmy combined to secure the win. This victory leveled the T20I series between the two teams, setting the stage for a decisive third match.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss at the Harare Sports Club, Papua New Guinea made early breakthroughs with two wickets in the Powerplay. Despite a resilient partnership between Zimbabwe’s captain Mary-Anne Musonda and Modester Mupachikwa, PNG’s spinners managed to keep the scoring rate under control. Notably, all four PNG spinners conceded fewer than a run per ball, with Jimmy and Vicky Araa leading the bowling attack.

During their innings, PNG also found it challenging to score quickly at times. However, Siaka’s aggressive batting at number five kept them in the game, with her scoring 43 runs off 33 balls as the only player to maintain a strike rate of over 100.

In the Super Over, Siaka and Jimmy managed to score seven runs, and Jimmy’s disciplined bowling, including a crucial dot ball, ensured Papua New Guinea’s victory in the nail-biting encounter. This thrilling win set up a thrilling decider in the three-match series.
