“Bangladesh Announces Squad for First Sri Lanka Test, Former Captain Returns”

Bangladesh has announced a formidable 15-member squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Sylhet, commencing on 22 March.

Wicketkeeper-batsman and former captain Litton Das makes his return to the Bangladesh Test side after missing the previous series against New Zealand due to paternity leave.

During Litton’s absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto took over the captaincy for the series against New Zealand and was subsequently appointed as the captain across all three formats last month. This ICC World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka will mark Najmul’s first assignment as the full-time Test captain.

Litton, who was recently dropped from the ODI squad due to a dip in form, has featured in 39 Tests, amassing 2394 runs at an average of 36.27. He also served as the designated wicketkeeper in 28 of these Test matches.

Nurul Hasan, who replaced Litton as the wicketkeeper during the home Test series against New Zealand, has not been included in the squad.

The 15-member squad also includes newcomers pacers Nahid Rana and Mushfik Hasan. Senior pacer Ebadot Hossain remains sidelined due to a knee injury sustained last year, causing him to miss the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.

“Rana is a very promising talent. He is arguably the fastest bowler in Bangladesh at the moment and can generate steep bounce as well,” commented former Bangladesh player and current selection panel member, Abdur Razzak. “Although it’s early days for him, his first-class record is quite impressive. Additionally, we have another young pacer in Mushfik Hasan in the squad. With Ebadot Hossain injured and Taskin Ahmed not playing Tests currently, this presents the perfect opportunity for these pacers to gain experience.”

The first Test is scheduled to commence in Sylhet on 22 March, followed by the subsequent match in Chattogram starting from 30 March.

Bangladesh Test squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Zakir Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, Litton Kumer Das, Mominul Haque Showrab, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shahadat Hossain Dipu, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Mushfik Hasan, Nahid Rana.
