“Rishabh Pant Expresses Gratitude for Return to Cricket: ‘Feels Like I’m Making My Debut Again'”

India star Rishabh Pant is on the brink of making a comeback to cricket after a hiatus of over a year. Pant’s absence from the sport stemmed from a severe car accident he endured in December 2022, resulting in a prolonged recovery period of 14 months.

Following the accident, Pant underwent intricate surgery on the three ligaments in his right knee and underwent comprehensive rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to address various other injuries.

In a significant development, Pant received medical clearance from the NCA on Tuesday, 12 March, marking his readiness to return to competitive action. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pant will make his comeback during the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), serving as a wicketkeeper-batter.

Expressing his emotions, Pant conveyed his excitement and nerves, likening his return to cricket as a debut once again. He expressed gratitude towards his supporters, fans, the BCCI, and the NCA for their unwavering backing during his rehabilitation journey.

Currently, Pant is partaking in a pre-season training camp in Visakhapatnam, gearing up for the initial matches of the IPL season. Delhi Capitals’ head coach, Ricky Ponting, shared insights into Pant’s preparation, stating that the player has participated in practice matches recently, displaying promising signs of recovery.

Ponting lauded Pant’s dedication to fitness and affirmed that his batting prowess remains intact. Pant’s return to competitive cricket also holds significance for the Indian team, especially considering the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in June.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized that Pant would be considered for the T20 World Cup squad if he demonstrates his capabilities as a wicketkeeper-batter during the IPL. A successful season with both bat and gloves would bolster Pant’s case for selection in the national squad.
